Since May of 2002, according to reports gleaned from media accounts, 22 people have died while detained by or in the custody of BC police officers. The list of the names of the dead and the dates they died can be found in our letter dated March 31, 2006, which was distributed to Joseph Wood, Q.C., Attorney General Oppal, Solicitor General Les and Police Complaint Commissioner Ryneveld. It includes Ian Bush, Kevin St. Arnaud and Kyle Tait, all shot by police in suspicious circumstances.

The police are public servants who do a very difficult and demanding job under often dangerous and trying circumstances. They deserve our admiration and respect. However, they run the risk of losing that respect when they investigate themselves and whitewash their responsibility.
Families of the deceased and the public need a system that ensures timely, objective investigations in cases involving deaths at the hands of police. Right now, we don't have such a system in this province.
